Originally from Toronto,
Canada, Michael Unger is
pursuing a D.M.A. degree in organ performance
and an M.M. degree in harpsichord performance
at the Eastman School of Music. He studies
organ with David Higgs and harpsichord with
William Porter, and works as teaching assistant
to both professors. He completed an M.M. degree
in organ performance at Eastman and
undergraduate studies at the University of
Western Ontario in London, Canada, where he was
the graduating recipient of the University Gold
Medal in Music. His teachers there included
Sandra Mangsen for harpsichord and continuo and
the late Larry Cortner for organ. In addition,
he holds an Associateship diploma (ARCT) in
piano performance from the Royal Conservatory
of Music in Toronto.
Michael has performed recitals in Canada,
the United States, and Europe, and worked as an
accompanist and chamber musician. He was the
only North American semifinalist in the 2004
International Organ Competition in Odense,
Denmark, and was recently a semifinalist in the
2006 American Guild of Organists' National
Young Artist's Competition in Organ Performance
(NYACOP). At Eastman, he has worked as an
accompanist for the Eastman-Rochester Chorus
and Eastman Repertory Singers and performed as
an organist and harpsichordist with the Eastman
Collegium Musicum, Eastman School Symphony
Orchestra, and for Eastman faculty recitals by
Douglas Prosser and Chien-Kwan Lin. He sings
with the Christ Church Schola Cantorum in
Rochester and previously sang with the
University of Western Ontario Singers and the
Thames Scholars early music vocal ensemble,
national finalists in the 2002 CBC competition
for amateur choirs. As a composer, he earned
first prize in the 2002 Association of Canadian
Choral Conductors' Composition Competition. His
work was broadcast on CBC radio and is
published by Cypress Choral Music.
Michael has worked as the Music Director of
South Presbyterian Church in Rochester since
2002 to present and teaches secondary organ and
harpsichord at Eastman.
